Tonight (how cool am I for posting pics on the same day they were taken? Thank you iPhone.) we went to the farm show. We had fried vegetables and BBQ chicken and fries and soup for dinner. Cider floats (wow, super tasty) and potato donuts for desert. Then we met up with some friends to go see the animals. Adeline liked the sheep the best. She like the horse's cage better than the horse, and she had lots of fun standing at the geese cage with her friends. She didn't get her picture in the paper like I did when I visited the farm show on the day of my first birthday, but she is much cuter than me.

Sorry for not posting very often lately. Here are the highlights of the Adeline's fall:

Back in September, before it got too cold, we visited the playground for the first time. I didn't like the baby swings very much, but the slide with Daddy was pretty cool. This park is right near our house, so I anticipate begging Mommy to take me there often.

Then, in October, Mommy and Daddy celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary. Without me. Grandma and Grandpa watched me, and on the way there, we visited the pond where Mommy used to go with Uncle Jofin to feed ducks when they were little.

I sat in a restaurant high-chair for the first time. We had a table by the door and I smiled a great big smile at everyone who walked out.

In November, I learned how to crawl. Videos coming soon to a YouTube channel near you.

Also in November, Mommy and Daddy left me with one of my friend's Grandmas and went off to meet author David McCullough without me.

All through the fall and winter, Mommy makes soup at least once a week for Daddy, and since I am Daddy's girl, I love it too. Our favorite new recipe all around is Ribolita, thanks to Mrs. Taggart.

For Thanksgiving, Mommy made me an Indian hat. I also learned to wave and perfected crawling on Thanksgiving Day.

I have really been having fun in the bathtub. I like to play with my duckies, eat the cup, and try to grasp the stream of water from the faucet. I also have enough hair for a Mohawk.

My first food was avocados at five and a half months old. Since then I've tried bananas, carrots, pears, apples, rice cereal, rice cakes, broccoli, sweet potatoes. Avocados are still my favorite though bananas are a close second. I even chomped on a whole banana this week!

Adeline, Meet Teddy Bears

Adeline and I went to visit Great Grandma Reimer a few weeks ago. Great Grandma Reimer collects teddy bears. She has a whole room full of them. They live on the couch, in the rocking chair, hanging on the wall, standing by the play table...Its the room I used to sleep in when I went to visit her when I was little. There is a tiny pull-out couch that takes up the entire room when it is made into a bed, so I would be sleeping surrounded by stuffed teddy bears. There was even a teddy bear made into a real working telephone. Good memories. Anyway, Adeline liked the teddy bears too.

And in the teddy bear room, there lives an old fashioned oak high chair that can fold down into a rocker. I didn't know this, but it came from my Grandpa's farmhouse. He had (I think) five brothers, and they all used this high chair on the farm in the 20s and 30s. When my Grandpa got it later, he refinished it and put a new cane seat in it. Adeline couldn't quite sit in it herself, but with the help of Great-Grandma and a teddy bear, she played in it for a little bit!

We've settled on the first two fingers of the right hand. The left hand works in a pinch, but definitely not as good as the right. The pacifier is fine, but it is more fun to pull out and play with. Then when we are done playing with the pacifier, we throw it aside and suck on the fingers.

This one is from the end of April when Adeline was 2 months old. I used to have to wake her up like this 2-3 times a day or she would sleep all day long. Now I love getting her from her nap even more because she smiles and wiggles for me to pick her up, but I almost never have to wake her up. In fact, I hear her fussing even now.

Oh and in the future, I'll work on taking shorter videos that people besides me want to watch.

Independence Day Events

First, I dressed up like a boy and went up to the park with Mommy and Daddy to hear the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra.

While we waited for the concert to start, I played with Daddy.

Then I fell asleep.

When the drums got really loud, I woke up. Daddy let me ride on his shoulders. I liked the rest of the concert a lot and didn't go back to sleep at all!

Then, a few nights later, Mommy dressed me up so I looked sort of patriotic, and we went back to the park to watch the fireworks over the river!

I played superbaby again while we waited for it to get dark.

I fell asleep before the fireworks started and almost slept through the whole thing. Good thing the grand finale was so loud! Happy Birthday America!

I've always read to Adeline - more to keep me from being bored while nursing than for her edification. We've been through all of our children's books at least once, some four times. We've read a quarter of The Book of Virtues (yes, including the Plato...), my favorite novel - Beauty, The Jesus Storybook Bible, part of the Children's Story Bible (Daddy reads that one at night), and almost all of the Wizard of Oz. The Wizard of Oz has these wonderful black and white illustrations on almost every page, and in the past month I've noticed that Adeline will turn her head to gaze at the pictures more and more often. I've started to revisit our collection of picture books and she will stare and stare at the colorful pictures. Grandma and Grandpa read to her every day on vacation too:

The Creek Dock

Grandma and Grandpa's vacation house in South Carolina is right on the ocean AND has a dock out on the creek side of the island. Grandma goes out there every night to eat ice cream and watch the sun set and she brought Adeline with her a couple of times.

It was bed time, so she was fussy. Until Grandpa started singing...

Four and One Half Months Old!

We visited the doctor yesterday for Adeline's 4 month well-visit. Here are the latest stats:

Height: 25 3/4 in. (93rd percentile)

Weight: 12 lb. 4 oz. (21st percentile)

Head Circumference: 17 cm. (93rd percentile)

Going from the 53rd to the 21st percentile in weight gain wasn't the best news ever, so we have to go back in a month to make sure she doesn't continue to drop. The doctor said everything else looked great! Adeline is such a happy baby; she laughs, coos, talks, and now squeals. She can support her weight on her feet for quite a bit of time with a steadying hand to balance her since she doesn't know how to hold onto anything for balance yet. She is making some moves towards rolling over, but hasn't actually accomplished that. She loves to play with colorful toys and will reach out with both hands to grab them. This week, she especially enjoys the crinkly sound of the "nice green leaf" in The Very Hungry Caterpillar, so I think she is starting to associate her hand's movements with the effects.

Aunt Shelley is a nurse in the Navy, and she is serving our country in Kuwait this year. She arrived in Kuwait the day Adeline was born, so she hadn't met her in person - only via Skype. She had some R&R time that coincided with the Reimer family vacation in South Carolina, so she and Uncle Jofin were able to join us. Adeline liked playing with Aunt Shelley and can't wait for her to come home for good!

I loved the beach! I loved the way the sand felt kind of funny between my toes and how it gives a little when I kick my heels in it and how my feet sink into it near the water. I liked holding the squishy seaweed. I wasn't so sure about the waves though. They startled me and the water was cold compared to the Carolina summer air. But then Daddy held me and helped me not be afraid. He showed me how I could kick in the water and I liked that. Grandpa even dug me a pool in the sand where I could sit and play. It was so much fun!

We had some pretty big storms here last week with high winds and hail. There were even some tornadoes sighted between here and Carlisle. Thankfully all of the tall trees in our neighborhood survived. Adeline even slept through all of the thunder. Great-Grandma's trees unfortunately didn't fare as well (though thankfully she and her house are safe and sound) and Grandpa had to come supervise the workers cutting up the fallen branches. He stopped by on his way home to play "This Little Piggy Went to Market" with Adeline and Mr. Moo Cow.

He has the honored distinction of being the first favorite toy. Isn't he lovable?

Adeline will sit and entertain herself with him for quite a long time, fixated on the black and white or talking up a storm to the orange nose. She will grab onto the green ring or the flappy legs and move him around even though she doesn't really know that it is her own hands doing it. If she accidentally kicks him away from her where she can't see him, she will fuss until we give him back. She doesn't try to put him in her mouth yet, but I'm sure that's the next step in their relationship.

My Garden

This is what I did last week. I removed the sod from a 6'x6' square and transplanted most of it to other holes in our yard. Then I dug down 12" to aerate the soil and mixed in peat moss and good top soil. Then I dug a 6" trench around the outside, buried the chicken wire to prevent Peter Rabbit from getting in, filled the trench, and replaced the sod around the outside. Then I nailed together some (reclaimed) boards to make it look nicer (too cheap to buy enough soil to make it a true raised bed). And then I put (reclaimed) bricks inside so that I can step on them when I need to. Then I planted tomatoes, peppers, carrots, lettuce, and zucchini. Today I bought some herbs and marigolds to add. Now we'll see what makes it to August!

Longwood Gardens

Last week, Grandma treated Adeline and Mommy to a trip to Longwood Gardens. Adeline LOVED being outside and looking all around:

My first Mother's Day

I am so blessed to be a Mommy. I love it. It is the best thing in the world. I love getting her up in the morning. I love dressing her. I love nursing her. I love when she falls asleep in my arms. I even love holding her while she screams. I love spending all day every day with her. I love that she goes with me and comes home with me. And my heart just absolutely melts every single time she looks up at me and smiles. I can't even describe how much I love this tiny girl and how thankful and awed I am that God gave her to us at this time last year in his perfect timing.

Mr. and Mrs. Boland came to visit me, but I was so hungry, that I just had to reach right down and try Mr. Boland's finger. I soon figured out that it wasn't that tasty. After Mommy fed me some chocolate ice cream milk, I felt a lot better and enjoyed the Boland visit a lot!

A Tentatively Very Good Blog Post

I spent a few minutes this morning poking around for some old files that I know I have here somewhere, but can't find. Know that feeling? Yeah. I know they're in the house, but they're probably at the bottom of some box I have yet to unpack.

Anyway. In the process, I came across an e-mail I wrote about halfway through our senior year of college. It said, in part, "things are looking tentatively very good with the WH."

Since most people who read this blog are relatively normal, you're probably wondering what in the world that means. So let's deconstruct it.

"Tentatively very good" is an utterly meaningless phrase, if you think about it. The only people who use such phrases are either (a) hopelessly ensconced in Washington, D.C. and think so highly of themselves that they haven't noticed that the words that come out of their mouths have ceased to make sense or (b) doing their damndest to become (a). I was (b). And by the way, I'm not saying everyone who lives in D.C. is (a). I just wanted to be.

"WH," similarly, is an acronym for the White House that is only used by (a) people who are in the know in Washington, D.C. or (b) are pretending to be (a). Again, I was (b).

So, to summarize, at that point in life, I was desperately angling for a job at the White House, and I had myself convinced it was actually semi-likely to happen.

You probably know how things turned out. I didn't come close to getting a job at the White House. Instead, I ended up in Philadelphia, where God first humbled me a great deal (though I'm sorry to report he's got a lot more work to do) and then gave me Charissa. Both of these things were not "tentatively very good" but rather incredibly good. Neither was on my radar screen when I was obsessed with the "WH."

Today, I couldn't be more thankful I didn't get my wish. This, the fact that God is sovereign and it's good for us, was one of the first lessons he began to teach me.

Adeline is Ten Weeks Old!

She can sit up in her Bumbo chair, as long as Mommy is right there to catch her head when it gets too heavy.

We went to the doctor yesterday and here are her new stats:

Weight: 10 pounds, 14 ounces (53rd percentile)

Height: 24 inches (93rd percentile)

Head circumference: can't remember the measurement, but it was the 96th percentile...we're pretty sure she is our baby...

She didn't smile when she got her shots yesterday, but normally, she is such a happy baby and she is still sleeping like a champ at night. She even started sleeping in her crib in her own room at night this week.

My first Easter

First, Mommy got us all dressed up for church. Aunt Christina arrived early (!!!) and took some pictures of Mommy and Daddy and me in front of our house.

Then Mommy took some pictures of her with me.

I was a very good girl in church while Pastor Hartman preached a fabulous sermon about Jesus and how he died to save us from our sins and rose again to conquer death forever. I especially liked the Easter hymns because Mommy and Daddy held me while they sang them. (Usually I sit in my carseat for church, but we left it in the car since church was fuller than normal.) After church, Daddy stood outside in the sunshine with our friends and everyone liked my pretty dress and bonnet.

Then when we got home Mommy made me take some more pictures with Daddy in his awesome vest before he took it off to cook.

Aunt Christina, her boyfriend Andy, Uncle Jofin, Grandma, Grandpa, and Great Grandma came to share Mommy and Daddy's traditional Easter macaroni and cheese and hot-dogs. After the meal, I got to talk to Aunt Shelley on Uncle Jofin's iPhone (she was working an overnight shift in Kuwait but didn't have any patients, so she Skyped us!).
